The Future Of Yahoo

Blackett

Normally we dont talk about more serious issues but this caught my eye and I thought I have an opinion or two on that Media Guardian flagged up comments made about the talks over what will happen to Yahoo. Microsoft have been talking about taking it over and the recent comments made by Yahoo execs have made me rather happy and develop feelings of like towards the often messy and shittier Yahoo. Its nice to hear a company talking about its development in terms of users rather than how much money they can roll about in after a take over.

This sort of thing concerns me. I'm thoroughly sick of companies trying to monopolise an area of the market in order to outweigh the competition.
Although I understand that this is a sound business tactic, the effects it has on the normal consumer has the potential to be devastating.
Apple have an almost total monopoly on the online music market, as well as being the first choice for designers and creative professionals. Microsoft have the benefit of an almost limitless potential for developing an OS that actually works, with their third party contacts and out of house developers.

Now, there are benefits and disadvantages to owning a PC or a Mac, but it seems like a scary possibility that you'll need one machine to do one thing, and another to do everything else rather than it simply being a user choice.
Good on Yahoo for sticking to their guns. These massive companies need to learn that restricting consumers is not a tactic that will work. They'll turn to the competition, and in turn the competition will become the big fish.

Sigh.
